Build belonging into the first hello

Belonging begins before a member contributes for the first time. The first invitation, the account experience, and the first useful interaction all signal whether there is a place for them here.
Make the invitation specific
Explain who the community is for and what people can expect to do together. Specific examples help someone recognize a connection to their own interests. Avoid asking for commitment before the purpose and value of participation are clear.
Respect different ways of joining
People bring different devices, communication preferences, and levels of confidence. Use familiar language, provide accessible account choices, and explain consent in plain terms. A clear beginning reduces uncertainty and leaves room for thoughtful participation.
Offer a low-pressure first action
Not every member is ready to introduce themselves publicly. Reading a useful guide, finding a relevant topic, or asking a private question can be a meaningful first step. Give people a way to explore before expecting them to contribute.
Keep the welcome going
A welcoming message is only a beginning. Make support visible, explain community expectations, and keep essential resources easy to find. Pay attention to the questions newcomers repeat; they often reveal the most important opportunities to improve.
